Insurance Denied Wegovy — Now What?

📊 What patients commonly report

Patients facing a Wegovy denial often find themselves navigating a complex appeals process, which frequently requires their doctor to correct prior authorization errors or write a letter of medical necessity. If appeals fail or are not supported by their provider, many patients explore alternative GLP-1 medications like Zepbound or Mounjaro, which their insurance might cover under different criteria. Some also consider self-pay options, seeking discounts through various online pharmacies, while others turn to compounded versions of these medications, understanding the associated risks.

💬 What patients said

"My doctors office filled out my prior authorization wrong by clicking “no” if the person lost 5% even though my previous PA had “yes.” My previous approved PA was submitted from a different doctor but I had an uncomfortable experience and switched providers. This new provider is the one who sent the new PA and answered “no.” They claim they didn’t have the medical history to press “yes.” Even though I told them I have medical history that proves I did lose 5% of my weight. They said I would need to self appeal and which I told asked my insurance about self appealing. They said they need a letter of medical necessity from my doctor. I reached back out to my doctor who said they won’t do the appeal or write a letter of medical necessity since I’m at my goal weight, eve"

"CVS Caremark forced me off of Zep and onto Wegovy last year. It did not go well, especially regarding a return of OSA symptoms. Doc & I appealed, citing side effects and OSA, and Caremark approved me for Mounjaro. Why that over Zep? Your guess is as good as mine. Now I'm approaching Medicare eligibility, so I asked my doc to change the prescription to reflect OSA. She did, and lo & behold, I just picked up a new box of Zep to begin next week. TLDR; it's possible."

"Told my Endo I’m compounding Tirz because he prescribed Zepbound for me and insurance denied it. He oversees my care, does labs and sets my dose schedule and I convert it based on the Tirz schedule. So I’m on 6mg Reta but he thinks I’m at 7.5 of Tirz, the basic equivalent."
